One of our biggest worries sailing off into the sunset was how to get enough milk for our kids. We went through a weekly delivery of 3.5 Gallons per week at home, and there’s no way we’d have the fridge space for that on the boat. We figured that we would give dried milk a try. We mixed up a batch and put it into a regular milk jug to hide it. The kids were not fooled. They rebelled immediately.
Ok, so dried milk wasn’t going to work for the kid’s drinks. Now what to do with the rest of the powder we bought? We make pancakes and waffles at least once a week (our favorite GF mix is King Arthur), so we started mixing in the dried milk in place of regular milk. It was a hit! Not only did the kids not notice, but they actually preferred it.
Hmm. Could this miracle extend to the other hard to source common fresh item in our fridge? Maybe. We bought some dried eggs and gave it a go. Success! Now we use dried milk and dried eggs everytime we bake or cook. It doesn’t solve the need to have fresh milk and fresh eggs, but it sure cuts down on how much we go through (we use 2 cups per batch of pancakes).
Bonus: we did find shelf stable milk that isn’t half bad. You can find it at most grocery stores, but Walmart seems to be the cheapest (surprise surprise). Just make sure it’s cold. The kids are satisfied with it when we run low on fresh stuff. As long as it’s cold. Did I mention to keep it cold? It’s really gross warm.
Bonus bonus: try to get them to drink soy, almond, coconut, etc milk. We buy a case of soy every time we go to Costco. It’s great in smoothies and overnight oats.
